How Often Should You Wash Your RV Roof? A Nebraska Owner's Guide
Written by Matthew Brunken · Omaha RV Cleaning Co.
Here's a fact that surprises most RV owners: the black streaks running down your sidewalls don't come from the road. They come from your roof. Rain washes grime, oxidation, and (on rubber roofs) chalky residue off the roof surface, where it sheets down the sides and bakes on. Clean roof, dramatically fewer streaks. It's that simple.
This is one part of a larger exterior-care routine. Our complete Omaha RV cleaning guide explains how roof, sidewall, interior, and seasonal work fit together.
How often, for Nebraska?
For a rig stored outside in the Omaha area:
- Every wash. The roof should be washed every single time the RV is washed — not as an occasional extra. We include it in every exterior wash for this reason.
- At minimum, twice a year: once in the fall before storage, once in spring after the winter grime.
- After heavy pollen or a dusty country-road trip. Both settle into roof texture and become tomorrow's streaks.
Why it matters more here
Nebraska's climate is rough on roof membranes: intense summer UV (rubber roofs chalk fastest in high-sun climates), spring pollen loads, and fall harvest dust. And the freeze-thaw cycles put stress on roof sealant — which brings up the second reason roof care matters.
The inspection bonus
The only thing more expensive than a dirty roof is a leaking one you didn't know about. Roof sealant (around vents, AC units, and edges) cracks over time. A $50 tube of sealant applied early prevents rotted decking and interior water damage that runs into the thousands.
Any time we're on your roof, we look — and we tell you what we see, at no charge. It's the most valuable two minutes of the whole wash.
What not to do
- No pressure washers on the roof membrane (they lift seams and force water into edges)
- No abrasive brushes on rubber (accelerates chalking)
- No household degreasers — RV roofs need membrane-safe cleaners
Our exterior wash includes the roof every time, plus the eyes-on inspection. That's the routine your roof actually needs.
