Why Your Used RV Smells Musty — and How to Actually Fix It

Written by Matthew Brunken · Omaha RV Cleaning Co.

A musty smell in a used RV is frustrating, especially when it returns after airing the coach out. Fragrance can cover the symptom temporarily, but a better first step is to find the source.

Where the smell can live

  • Mattress and sleeping surfaces: foam and fabric can hold years of odor and humidity.
  • Upholstery and curtains: soft materials retain smoke, food, pet, and closed-up odors.
  • The refrigerator and drains: a closed appliance or neglected drain can smell stronger than the rest of the coach.
  • Hidden moisture: check around slide seals, windows, plumbing access points, and soft flooring for signs of a leak.

If you see active water intrusion, soft flooring, staining, or suspected extensive mold, address the moisture problem first. Cleaning alone cannot correct an active leak.

A practical first pass

1. Remove food, trash, and old refrigerator contents.

2. Open the refrigerator and clean it according to the appliance instructions.

3. Ventilate the coach on a dry day.

4. Vacuum mattress surfaces, cushions, flooring, and accessible storage.

5. Wipe hard surfaces and inspect corners, slide edges, and under-bed storage.

6. Note whether the odor is strongest near the bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, or a wall or floor seam.

Avoid saturating mattress foam or upholstery when the coach cannot be thoroughly dried. A wet interior in a closed RV can create a more difficult problem.

When low-moisture sanitation makes sense

After the source has been addressed, dry-vapor steam may be appropriate for some compatible surfaces as a low-moisture sanitation step. It is not a substitute for leak repair, mold remediation, or professional inspection of serious water damage.

Our RV interior cleaning service covers the living space, while mattress steam cleaning focuses on sleeping surfaces. Learn more in the complete Omaha RV cleaning guide.

Keep the smell from returning

Air the RV before closing it, avoid sealing in damp towels or upholstery, leave the refrigerator ajar when appropriate, and deal with small seal or plumbing leaks promptly. For seasonal maintenance, use our Nebraska winter-storage checklist.
