How to Store Your RV for a Nebraska Winter (So Spring Isn't Awful)
Written by Matthew Brunken · Omaha RV Cleaning Co.
What you do before winter storage affects what you find in April. A clean, dry coach is easier to open in spring than one sealed with road film, food residue, and damp upholstery.
Wash the exterior before storage
Remove road salt, bug remains, bird droppings, tannin stains, and black-streak film before freeze-thaw cycles and snow keep them against the finish. A storage-ready wash should include the roof, since roof residue can continue to run down clean sidewalls.
- Rinse loose grit before contact washing
- Use products appropriate for the exterior and roof material
- Treat black streaks carefully rather than scrubbing aggressively
- Consider a compatible protective finish
For the full maintenance context, read our Omaha RV cleaning guide and roof-washing guide.
Check seals, awnings, and tires
Inspect roof sealant around vents, air-conditioning units, and edges for cracking or lifting. Look over slide-out seals, awnings, and tires as well. Cleaning will not repair failed sealant, but it can make problems easier to see before storage.
Leave the interior clean and dry
Before closing the coach:
- Air it out on a dry day
- Vacuum floors, cushions, slide-outs, and accessible storage
- Clean the refrigerator and prop the doors open when appropriate
- Remove food and anything that can hold moisture
- Make sure bathroom and kitchen surfaces are dry
- Use moisture-control products according to their instructions
For a used or musty coach, read how to get a musty smell out of an RV. A low-moisture sanitation service may be useful after the moisture source is addressed, but it is not a replacement for leak repair or mold remediation.
Think ahead to spring
Outdoor storage is easier when the RV goes away clean and dry. Schedule a spring inspection and wash before the first trip, especially if the rig remains outside through winter. Our seasonal RV washing service can be arranged at a home or eligible storage location across the Omaha metro.
